As a byproduct, the remaining plant is left over after the wheat harvest. Because wheat straw contains so much cellulose, it can be used as a polymer. A polymer is simply a chain of repeating units. Plastic is an artificial polymer, whereas wheat straw polymers are completely natural!

There are a few environmentally friendly steps involved in making wheat straw.

By combining the lignin with sugar, a bacteria in soil, Rhodococcus jostii, breaks down the lignin that keeps the straw upright. A plastic-like structure is formed as a result of the mixture, which can then be molded into a product, such as a cup, a storage container, or an eco friendly toothbrush.
